Waking up in a van with my lover in a strange cold town in the middle of nowhere was the most pleasant sensation. I travelled overseas for the very first time and I wouldn’t have wished for it to be any other way…
Being surprised with tickets to New Zealand in a Netgear box was quite the birthday gift from the other half… Little did I know the real gift was yet to come. Road tripping the South Island was the most treasured experience I have ever lived..Who would have thought driving 3000kms in 10 days would be so delightful! The travel bug has bitten and I’m happily infected.
If I’ve enticed you into exploring the beautiful South Island, heres a few things
about my experience;
about my experience;
THINGS TO KNOW
~Skip the cities
Spend more time in the alpine areas, it’s the only thing I would change about our trip.
Don’t rush to get from A to B, whenever you get the chance just stop, jump out and absorb your surroundings. I’ve never seen grass so green and water so clear. Just take it all in!
Take a left turn instead of right. Why not? You won’t be disappointed.
The next destination may only be 100kms away but can easily take 2+ hours to get to. They’re windy, steep and vastly dangerous, stay safe!
TRAVELING WITH YOUR LOVER
I strongly believe that travelling is the ultimate test for any relationship.
My experience travelling with Keegan brought nothing but intense happiness. It welcomed me into a whole new chapter of our relationship.. He’s since become my best friend as well as my lover. To be able to share such an amazing experience, run a muck and laugh off our frustration with each other has led me to unveil a whole new kind of love. It excites me to travel the rest of the world together.
Explorer socks and docs were my saviour. Hiking to get to glaciers or mountains isn’t your normal walk in the park. Other things I found useful were thermals, sunglasses string, Burt’s Bees lip balm, vix, hand sanitiser and a trusty old back pack. Oh and a never ending playlist!
Start to finish was nothing but pure bliss! From driving down the West Coast,
hiking to Frans Joseph Glacier,
the epic drive to Milford Sound,
exploring the Larnach Castle,
finishing up with the captivating Hooker Valley track to Mount Cook,
the list just goes on..
On top of all these breathtaking adventures, a huge highlight was the van life itself. Pulling up to camp for the night, making dinner with whatever we had leftover and drinking a bottle of red amongst huge mountains left us just wanting more.
All in all, at the very least our 10 days spent completely consumed in New Zealand’s beauty was nothing short of breathtaking.
Until next time NZ! x
